Dog dies from common algae after going for a swim

BOSTON (NBC, KYMA) - A Massachusetts woman says her dog died after swimming at a local pond and vets say a common form of algae is likely to blame.

It turns out it's a problem in ponds and lakes this time of year and vets say very few dog owners are aware of it. 

The lakes and ponds that pet owners use to refresh their dogs in the summer could actually kill them. Some forms of algae could contain Cyanobacteria that could kill dogs simply by getting in the water.

If you do notice cloudy water, a more than normal amount of algae or you or your animal shows symptoms, contact your vet or doctor.

The best advice: When in doubt, stay out.
