Nearly 1,650 people across the country contract cyclosporiasis

(NBC, KYMA) - The CDC has confirmed 1,645 people have contracted the food-borne illness called cyclosporiasis across the country.

The agency issued a health alert this week confirming the information, with the alert stating another 5,100 cases are being investigated as cyclosporiasis.

141 people have been hospitalized due to the illness.

More than 30 states have reported cases, with Michigan leading the way the lions share of those cases.

Michigan health officials have flagged lettuce and salad greens as a potential source based on more than 1,000 interviews with people who've tested positive.

To reduce the risk of contracting the illness, the CDC recommends washing fresh produced under running water before eating.
