New survey says people are choosing stay at home when they’re on vacation

(CBS, KYMA) - With the cost of airfare up from last year, many Americans are choosing staycations instead.

The expected vacation cost for the average American household this summer is around $4,000, according to a 2026 Deloitte survey. That is up 17% from last year.

For those who are priced out of taking a trip, there are things people can do to feel like they're on vacation.

"You have to unplug here. Set 'You're out office.' Don't do your laundry, don't do any of those things at home. Also look at a hotel day pass or a spa day pass," said Kelly O'Grady, CBS MoneyWatch Correspondent and CBS Saturday Morning co-anchor.

People can also rent amenities, such as pools or an event space. The key, experts say, is to get in the right mindset.
