Spain’s Running of the Bulls taking place this week

PAMPLONA, Spain (NBC, KYMA) - Pamplona, Spain's annual San Fermin Festival is taking place this week.

The main draw of the festival: The Running of the Bulls through the narrow, cobblestone streets of the town.

The tradition began many years ago as local youth started running with cattle that was being herded through the city to be sold, or for bullfights.

It was later tied to the annual San Fermin Festival, that honors the city's first bishop, St. Fermin.

During Wednesday's run, 11 bulls charged out of their pen as a mass of people waited down the street for their chance to run with the bulls.

Three people were injured, including one who was taken to the hospital after being gored.

The San Fermin Festival draws thousands of participants and spectators each year for a week of daily bull runs through the city.
