Michigan man drowns while swimming with son

SHIAWASSEE COUNTY, Mich. (NBC, KYMA) - A father lost his life Thursday while swimming with his son in an Owosso lake, Shiawassee County deputies say.

According to law enforcement, the drowning occurred around 5 p.m. Eastern.

A 40-year-old man and his eight-year-old son left the safe swimming area without a life preserver while attempting to swim across the lake, officials stated.

The pair got halfway across and then nearby campers heard both of them yelling for help.

A nearby good Samaritan entered the water and rushed to their aid, unable to keep both afloat, the rescuer was only able to save the child.

Emergency crews arrived and within 20 minutes of entering the lake they found the father.

Despite life saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
