CHP urges drivers to drive responsibly during Fourth of July weekend

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KYMA) - The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is asking drivers to slow down and drive responsibly during the Fourth of July weekend.

CHP says they will be conducting a Holiday Enforcement Period (HEP), taking place Thursday, July 2, 2026 at 6 p.m. to Sunday, July 5, 2026 at 11:59 p.m., to combat unsafe driving and keep roads in California safe.

During last year's HEP, CHP says they responded to more than 850 speed-related crashes, with at least seven of the crashes resulted in death while nearly 400 crashes resulted in injuries to those involved.

CHP also said they made over 1,310 arrests for driving under the influence.

"Reckless driving and speeding continue to endanger lives on California's roadways," said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. "As families and friends travel this holiday weekend, we urge everyone to slow down, be considerate of others and make responsible choices behind the wheel. Getting there safely is what matters most."
