President Trump cancels Housing Act signing

WASHINGTON (NBC, KYMA) - President Donald Trump suddenly and unexpectedly canceled Wednesday's scheduled signing of a housing bill, saying he won't add his signature until a sweeping elections bill is approved.

In a social media post, the president said, "Today's housing news conference and signing is hereby canceled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE America Act, which I consider to be a national emergency."

The housing bill cleared both houses of Congress this week with overwhelming and bipartisan majorities and was waiting for the president's signature.

The president was supposed to travel to the capitol to sign the legislation, and the White House had even called the measure part of his affordability agenda.

Throughout his term in office the president has pushed for passage of the SAVE America Act would add proof of citizenship and voter ID requirements in every state.

GOP leadership in Congress says there is not enough support to get it approved.

The housing bill could still become law in about two weeks if the president refuses to sign or veto the legislation.
