Drone catches shark circling surfer in California

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Some heart-stopping moments were caught on drone video in California recently as a shark was spotted circling a surfer.

The footage was captured off the coast of Santa Cruz. The shark starts off as a shadow in the distance, but the surfer captures the its attention.

It began to close in, and circled around the surfer, leading to some tense moments, at least for the drone operator.

The shark came right up behind the surfer at one point, closing to within a few feet before peeling off.

It's unknown if the surfer had any idea the shark was circling him at the time.
