Black smoke rises from airport in the Dominican Republic

LA ROMANA, D.R. (CBS, KYMA) - A private Gulfstream G200 jet crashed while attempting an emergency landing at La Romana International Airport in the Dominican Republic Sunday, killing both crew members on board, according to airport officials.

Footage shared online shows thick black smoke rising from the airport after the crash.

Airport officials said the aircraft declared an emergency shortly after takeoff while en route to Austin, Texas, before attempting to return to La Romana.

The airport said the pilot and co-pilot, the only people on board, died in the crash, and authorities said the cause remains under investigation.
