Five injured in Penn Station stabbing in New York City
NEW YORK CITY (NBC, KYMA) - One person is in custody after five people were injured in a stabbing inside New York's Penn Station just after 7 p.m. Sunday.
A chaotic scene outside of Penn Station as police and EMTs respond to what police say was a stabbing incident.
Amtrak Police said five people were injured.
"They are just like terrified. Yeah, just terrified," said an employee at a nearby shop.
The stabbing happened inside of the station.
The employee says he saw people running in a panic, followed by Amtrak Police who he says tackled a man to the ground before eventually arresting him.
"They had to get other cops in order to grab him, you know," the employee shared.
"I just saw the cops. They were running into that area. They pinned him down. There were like five cops that pinned him down," said Michael Christian, a witness.
The video, shared with NBC affiliate WNBC, shows multiple officers subduing a person near the NJ Transit Concourse as people look on.
Authorities have not confirmed if this is the suspect.
A senior law enforcement official said one person, believed to have mental health issues, was taken into custody following the stabbing that injured five people.
Christian, who works nearby, says he recognized the man who police took down and carted off in cuffs.
"I've seen him once but I think he was capable of doing anything because most of these homeless people they're mostly talk. They just talk a lot and don't really do anything. That's why I'm kind of surprised he actually did something," Christian expressed.
Footage captured by WNBC shows at least two victims were bandaged up and put in ambulances on stretchers.
Of the six victims, one was said to have serious injuries while the rest range from moderate to minor injuries.
The act of violence shocked commuters who stumbled upon the bloody scene.
"I thought at first, it was a message that somebody wanted to give, but then I heard someone was stabbed in here, so yeah it was shocking," said Melissa Solamo, a woman from Costa Rica.
