At least 19 dead after 7.8-magnitude earthquake strikes southern part of the Philippines

(CNN, KYMA) - At least 19 people are reported dead after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern part of the Philippines.

The early morning quake Monday struck just as the new school year was beginning.

Footage captured shows the terrified children as they huddled together while the ground shook beneath them.

A collapsing structure behind them made the panic even worse as they waited for the shaking to stop.

Footage captured also shows damaged roads and crumbling buildings.

Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has deployed government agencies to act immediately to help evacuate residents and begin rescue work.
