Man who barricaded himself inside Chase Bank building in California dies, hostages unharmed

UPDATE (9:04 AM): An hours-long hostage situation inside a bank in Bakersfield, California is over.

The man who barricaded himself inside a Chase Bank building with a number of hostages Tuesday afternoon has died at the scene, and all the hostages have been recovered unharmed.

According to a statement from the Bakersfield Police Department, "The hostage situation concluded following an officer-involved shooting involving federal bureau of investigation personnel" around 4:20 a.m. Pacific.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Police continued negotiations Wednesday with a man who barricaded himself inside a Chase Bank building in Bakersfield, California Tuesday afternoon with an unknown number of people.

Officers responded to a bomb threat call at the bank building in Downtown Bakersfield around 1 p.m. and "discovered a man barricaded inside with several members of the community," according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

The exact number of hostages is unknown.

Crisis negotiators and the FBI have secured the release of two people, and the remaining hostages are said to be "in good health."

No injuries have been reported.

Some people did manage to escape from the building, according to authorities.

The department's Crisis Negotiation Team was in telephone contact with the suspect.

Officers have established a perimeter around the building and nearby businesses.

About a dozen police patrol cars were at the scene, along with a tactical vehicle and several emergency response teams.

FBI agents were also present as officials continue to work to resolve this tense situation.
