Central baseball, Brawley softball one win away from CIF-SDS Championship appearance

IMPERIAL VALLEY, Calif. (KYMA) - After a busy week of CIF-San Diego Section playoff action, only two Imperial Valley teams remain in the hunt for a championship appearance. Central Spartans baseball and Brawley Wildcats softball.

The Spartans continue to defend their home field as the No. 3 seed in the Division III baseball playoffs. Central opened postseason play with a dominant 6-0 win over the Mar Vista Mariners before surviving an 11-9 battle against the Foothills Christian Knights to advance to the semifinals.

Now, the Spartans will face the Knights once again in a semifinal rematch thanks to the tournament's double-elimination format.

Even after Central's recent victory, the Knights enter the matchup with advantages in several statistical categories. Including batting average, RBIs and ERA. Still, history favors the Spartans, who have won three of the last four meetings between the two programs dating back to 2015.

Meanwhile, the Brawley Wildcats softball team is also preparing for a semifinal showdown on its home field.

As the No. 1 seed in Division III softball, Brawley has taken full advantage of home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Wildcats opened bracket play with an 11-2 victory over the Coronado Islanders and will now host them again in the semifinals.

The Wildcats are putting together their strongest season since the 2021-22 campaign. Posting an 18-10 overall record while finishing second in the Imperial Valley League standings.

Unlike Central's matchup, the Wildcats and Islanders appear evenly matched statistically, setting up what could be one of the most competitive semifinal games of the postseason.

Both games are scheduled for tomorrow, with spots in their respective CIF championships on the line.
