Small, unknown explosive device thrown near polling place in Pennsylvania

CATASAUQUA, Pa. (CBS, KYMA) - Police said they were investigating after a small, unknown explosive device was thrown from a vehicle outside a polling place in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania, about 60 miles north of Philadelphia, Tuesday.

It happened near Salem United Church of Christ, which was a polling place, on Third Street in Catasauqua, as voters were heading to the polls to pick the Democratic and Republican nominees for the Midterm elections.

Agencies involved in the investigation included Pennsylvania State Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and local law enforcement, but officials had provided few details about the incident by the time of publication.

Trooper Nathan Branosky, a public information officer for Pennsylvania State Police's Troop M, told reporters the incident happened around 9:15 am.

There were no reported injuries and there was no ongoing threat to the public, Branosky said.

The Catasauqua Fire Department said several roads surrounding Third Street were shut down while authorities responded.

People trying to reach the polling place were told to enter via an entrance on Fourth Street.
