Uncontrolled wildfire in Minnesota sends smoke of smoke into the air

CROSBY, Minn. (CBS, KYMA) - Red flag conditions accelerated the spread of a wildfire in central Minnesota Saturday, with the blaze burning more than 1,660 acres as of Monday, according to officials.

The Minnesota Incident Command System said the Flanders Fire, burning ten miles east of Breezy Point, along Highway 6, was 20% contained as 100 personnel and multiple aircraft responded.

"Yesterday, numerous firefighting aircraft were used for water and fire-retardant drops to slow the fire spread and reduce the intensity of the fire on the edges and near private property," the command system said. "Overnight, firefighters were able to get a better assessment of the fire size, and based on heat signature returns, the estimated size is 1,200 acres."

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office issued evacuation orders for residents in the vicinity of the blaze.

"Wildfires are unpredictable, and conditions can change rapidly. Additional notifications and evacuation information will be provided as needed. Emergency personnel continue working to protect life and property as the fire moves through the area," the sheriff's office said.

Several fire departments continued to provide structure protection throughout the affected areas, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

The National Weather Service said Saturday breezy winds and low humidity would cause "near-critical fire weather conditions" in the region that evening.

Footage captured by Tara Fries shows large columns of smoke towering above Crosby, as well as emergency services responding to the blaze.
