Military Matters: New Bill to help K-9 Heroes

WASHINGTON D.C. (KYMA, KSWT). On any given day narcotic canines posted at our ports can find things that agents can’t. Their keen sense of smell can detect illicit drugs, currency and even explosives making canines vital to both the War on Drugs and the War on Terrorism But, when these animals are too old to perform their usually adopted by either their handler or adopted by animal lovers.

   But, one Texas Congressman wants to do more and has introduced a new bill called the K-9 Hero Act. Representative Ron Wright announced the bill on Thursday during a press conference on Capitol Hill. In the bill, retired military and law enforcement canines, their new owners and nonprofits that help the animals would all receive aid in the form of financial assistance. Sadly, these animals have short lifespans and develop medical issues. The grant would provide funds for medical care which can exceed thousands of dollars a year.
