First eaglets of 2026 hatch in California

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Bald eagle pair Jackie and Shadow's first eaglets of the year hatched near Big Bear Lake over the weekend.

After 36 hours of hard work, the first eaglet emerged from its shell just after 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Its arrival was captured on livestream cameras operated by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV).

The hatch coms after two eggs the couple laid in January were breached by ravens while both parents were away from the nest.

Jackie then laid a second clutch of eggs in February, which included the one that hatched Saturday.

A second egg in the nest appeared to have a pip and FOBBV later confirmed it hatched Sunday morning.

Until officially named, the eaglets will be referred to as chick 1 and chick 2.

FOBBV says egg-laying season in Big Bear Lake runs from January to April. To watch the livestream of the nest, click here.
