Google allows users to rename their Gmail username

(NBC, KYMA) - Google is giving users the chance to fix a mistake they might have made years ago.

For the first time in the platform's 22-year history, Google users in the U.S. are now allowed to change their Gmail address name.

There are several steps online to go through with the change, including picking an address that has never been used before.

Once the move is made, the old address will appear as an alternate name for them.

Both their old and new Gmail name will work if someone is trying to reach you or if you're signing up for something.

Users can change their Gmail address three times.

There is a maximum one swap per year and reverting to a previous username will trigger a 30-day cooldown before a new one can be selected again.
