FBI Detroit Field Office provides update on synagogue attack

DETROIT (KYMA, NBC) - The FBI Detroit Field Office is holding a press conference Monday to provide an update on the synagogue attack earlier this month.

On March 12, 2026, a man crashed his vehicle into the Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, outside of Detroit, which ignited a fire.

As a result, security guards shot at the suspect, identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a Lebanese-born U.S. citizen from nearby Dearborn Heights, but according to Jennifer Runyan, the FBI Special Agent in Charge, Ghazali died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

More than 100 young children who attend the synagogue's pre-school and kindergarten were inside at the time of the attack, along with staff members.

While a security guard was hurt during the attack, and dozens of first responders were treated with smoke inhalation, no one else was injured.
