March heatwave continues to push temperatures into triple digits

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - A historic March heatwave is taking hold across Yuma and Imperial County, bringing dangerous and record-challenging heat that will last through the weekend and into early next week.

High pressure parked over the Desert Southwest is driving temperatures well above normal, with afternoon highs climbing into the 100 to 106 range Thursday and peaking even higher Friday between 102 and 108 degrees. That puts the region roughly 20 to 25 degrees above average for this time of year.

An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through Sunday, as the unusually early-season heat could pose risks, especially for those spending extended time outdoors. This kind of heat in March is uncommon, and many people may not be acclimated yet.

The combination of intense sunshine, very dry air, and light winds will make conditions even more dangerous. Humidity levels are expected to drop as low as five to 10% during the day, limiting the body's ability to recover, even overnight.

Looking ahead, temperatures will stay near or just below 100 degrees through the rest of the weekend, with only slight cooling expected by Sunday and Monday.

Even then, highs will remain well above normal. By the middle of next week, another round of warming is expected, with triple-digit heat likely returning.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks if working or exercising outside, and check in on vulnerable neighbors and family members.
