Firefighters battle fast-moving fire in Southern California

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - Firefighters in Southern California battled a fast-moving fire at a pallet yard Monday afternoon as strong winds pushed flames across nearby property.

The fire broke out just after 3 p.m. at a business along Main Street in Riverside, quickly spreading through stacks of wooden pallets.

When crews with the Riverside Fire Department arrived, they found heavy flames racing through the yard.

The fire eventually burned dozens of pallets and damaged at least two tractors on the property.

Officials say propane tanks attached to the tractors exploded during the blaze, adding to the intensity of the fire.

Strong winds, gusting around 20 miles per hour, fueled the flames and forced evacuations at several nearby businesses.

At least two buildings in the area were also damaged.

Firefighters say the wind pushed flames across main street, igniting vegetation in a nearby soccer field and golf course.

Additional crews from Cal Fire and the San Bernardino County Fire Department assisted in the response while a firefighter helicopter dropped water on the flames from above.

Police shut down all lanes of Main Street as crews worked to contain the blaze.

No injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
