Bulldogs’ historic season ends in playoff battle

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA) - The season came to a close Tuesday night on Carl Varner Court at Calexico High School, as the Bulldogs fell 54-46 to Ramona High School in the CIF San Diego Section Division III semifinals.

Despite the loss, head coach Hugo Estrada made one thing clear: This season was special.

"This group is a joy to coach," Estrada said. "I'm blessed with the group that we had these last couple of years. The same group has been together for three years, so it's been a blessing."

Calexico finishes the year 23-5 overall, including a perfect 8-0 run through the Imperial Valley League (IVL) to claim a league championship.

The Bulldogs consistently controlled games throughout the season, building one of the strongest résumés in recent program history.

"We had a great year in terms of winning our league and doing a lot of achievements as a team, as a group," Estrada said. "So I'm very, very proud of them."

In Tuesday's semifinal matchup, Calexico looked sharp for much of the first half, but couldn't maintain momentum down the stretch. Estrada credited Ramona for capitalizing in key moments.

"All credit to them," he said. "They're a really good team. They're big in every possession and they've got playmakers."

Even with the season ending one game shy of a section title appearance, Estrada believes this group has laid the groundwork for the future.

"I think these guys set the blueprint," he said. "Continue to work, continue to stay together. The chemistry was great. I have nothing but great things to say about my team, my coaching staff, and the Calexico community for the support."

From an undefeated league run to a deep postseason push, the Bulldogs' 23-win campaign will be remembered not just for the victories, but for the standard it now sets moving forward for Calexico basketball.
