New York man carrying explosives, weapons crashes through power substation’s gate in Boulder City
LAS VEGAS (NBC, KYMA) - A New York man carrying explosives and weapons drove a vehicle to Nevada before crashing through a secured gate at a power substation in Boulder City Friday morning.
During a press conference, officials shared security footage of the incident, which was reported around 10:00 a.m. Friday.
The driver of the vehicle was found dead inside of the car with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He was also found wearing soft body armor and was holding a shotgun with multiple other firearms, ammo, flamethrowers, and weapons inside the vehicle.
The man has been identified as 23-year-old Dawson Maloney from Albany, New York.
"In coordination with the Albany Police Department, we learned that the suspect had recently been reported missing out of New York and that he had communicated with family members," said Sheriff Kevin McMahill with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD).
"The suspect had made multiple statements referencing self harm, alluding to committing an act that would place him mother. The suspect referred to himself as a terrorist...and stated felt he had an obligation to carry out his act," Sheriff McMahill added.
Police confirmed Maloney traveled from New York to Nevada in a rental car and was staying at a motel that was later searched by police.
Investigators found multiple extremist related books and explosive materials inside that motel.
LVMPD and the FBI are investigating it as a possible terrorism incident, although the specific reason for targeting the substation is unknown.
Officials emphasized that there is no current threat to the public.
