Yuma High’s Derryel Medel signs letter of intent to San Diego City College for softball

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - A local standout is taking the next step in her academic and athletic journey.

Yuma High School senior Derryel Medel officially signed her letter of intent to continue her softball career at San Diego City College, marking a major milestone in her four-year run with the Criminals varsity softball team.

Medel was joined at the signing ceremony by her parents, including her father and high school head coach, Angel Medel. The moment celebrated not only her athletic achievements, but also the unique experience of being coached by her own father throughout her high school career.

During her time at Yuma High School, Medel built an impressive résumé. Over four varsity seasons, she posted a .460 career batting average on 73 hits with 42 RBIs. She balanced her success on the field with excellence in the classroom, maintaining a 3.8 GPA.

Medel said she is excited about the opportunity to continue her education and compete at the collegiate level in San Diego.

“I’m excited to further the schooling and excited to go [to San Diego]; excited to get out of Yuma and to be in a different environment with different people,” Medel said.

She also paid a lot of respect to her father.

“It was hard, but it was fun. I got to see both the coaching side of it, and then the parent side of it, so it was two very different points of view from where I was getting coached at. I feel like it helped me be better both as a player and as a person.”

Now, she looks ahead to new challenges, new teammates and a fresh start as she prepares to suit up for San Diego City College.
