Bytedance rolls out Seedance 2.0, drawing backlash from Hollywood

LOS ANGELES (CBS, KYMA) - A 15-second clip released late last week seemed to have the hallmarks of a big Hollywood studio: Two mega-famous leading men in Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, a choreographed fight scene, sweeping camera moves, sound effects, and even a musical score.

However, it was all generated by artificial intelligence (AI), and Hollywood is not happy.

At first glance, it looks like an epic fight scene starring two Hollywood heavyweights, but the Tom Cruise-Brad Pitt fight scene is AI-generated.

Bytedance, the Chinese tech company behind TikTok, just rolled out their new AI video generator, Seedance 2.0.

The viral video sparked yet another round of backlash and despair in Hollywood.

Rhett Reese, a screenwriter behind the "Deadpool" and "Zombieland" movies, posted to social media saying, "I hate to say it. It's likely over for us."

In a statement, SAG-AFTRA, the actors union, called the video unacceptable and said it "undercuts the ability of human talent to earn a livelihood."

Bytedance responded saying they are now "taking steps…to prevent the unauthorized use of intellectual property and likeness by users"

When asked why the reaction was so intense, Charlie Fink, host of The AI XR Podcast, said, "I think because it was so brazen…Hollywood is going through a lot of difficult changes."

When also asked what this type of technology does to the entertainment industry in the next year, Fink said, "There will be fewer jobs in Hollywood. There [are] already were fewer jobs. And the shame of it really will be that the below the line, people, the craftsmen, the drivers, the sound people, the camera, people, the catering people, those are the people who are gonna be affected the most."
