Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano spews lava into the sky

KILAUEA, Hawaii (NBC, KYMA) - Hawaii's Kilauea volcano spewed lava into the sky Sunday night.

The latest episode of Kilauea's ongoing eruption lasted more than nine hours, with the volcano's South Vent Fountain reaching as high as 1,300 feet.

Scientists said visual observations were hampered by cloudy and rainy conditions at the summit, but the U.S. Geological Survey says this was one of the Kilauea's most eruptive episodes of the year.

The National Weather Service issued an ashfall advisory for east and southeast areas of Hawaii island, but that warning has since been lifted.
