Yuma Catholic rolls past Tonopah Valley 3-0 in 3A playoff opener

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA-KECY-TV) — No. 6 Yuma Catholic made a strong opening statement in the 3A boys soccer playoffs Wednesday night, shutting out Tonopah Valley 3-0 at Ricky Gwynn Stadium.

From the opening whistle, the Shamrocks controlled possession and dictated the pace, keeping the action largely on Tonopah Valley’s side of the field. In fact, the majority of the first half was played in the visiting team’s half, with their striker rarely able to push the ball past midfield.

Yuma Catholic broke through in impressive fashion thanks to Diego Pompa. The junior delivered a highlight-reel goal from about five yards inside the opponent’s half, launching a shot that sailed past the keeper to give the Shamrocks a 1-0 lead.

The early strike set the tone.

Pompa wasn’t finished. He added his second goal later in the match, helping Yuma Catholic build breathing room as the Shamrocks continued to apply relentless pressure.

Camilo Merino added the third goal to cap off the night, putting the finishing touches on a dominant team performance.

The offense was fueled by strong distribution in the midfield. Gustavo Patiño recorded two assists, consistently creating scoring opportunities and breaking down the defense. Isaac Garcia also contributed with an assist, helping keep the attack sharp and organized.

Defensively, Yuma Catholic kept Tonopah Valley on its heels throughout the contest. The Shamrocks’ back line limited quality chances, and with possession so heavily tilted in their favor, the visitors struggled to generate sustained offense.

With the 3-0 victory, Yuma Catholic advances in the 3A state playoffs and continues its postseason push with momentum firmly on its side.
