San Pasqual wins crazy game for second place against Great Hearts Anthem

The Warriors defeated the Eagles 31-29 in a nail biter

SAN PASQUAL, Calif. (KYMA) - The San Pasqual Warriors survived a final comeback push from the Great Hearts Anthem Eagles, defeating them 31-29 in a game that came down to the final seconds of overtime.

Coming out of the break, the Warriors were up 16, holding the Eagles to just four points in the first half, looking like they were going to cruise to an easy win, but the script took a complete 180 in the second half.

As the final seconds of the game approached, San Pasqual's lead was erased, being held to three points the entire second half.

In a last ditch effort on an inbounds pass on the Eagles side of the court Aaliyah Rea brought the ball up, tightroping the sideline and splitting defenders where she found an open Karla Cortez, but she would miss from point-blank range.

With less than 15 seconds, the ball was loose and found the hands of Aaliyah Castillo who gave it back to Cortez who got her sweet redemption to tie the game with a jumper.

In overtime the Warriors used that momentum to secure the win with key buckets and clutch defense at important times.

Senior captain Delilah Clements said the team was able to secure the close win because of the teams bond.

"We just came together as a team. We build each other up no matter what. It's more like a family instead of a team," Clements said. "San Pasqual is very small, but we all have big hearts and we all love each other no matter what."

And the buy in from the girls at the beginning of the season was key too.

"When we started, the girls had their expectations high," said San Pasqual Head Coach Thomas Fernandez. "They're able to do things that most small teams can't and because they love each other that has a lot to do with their chemistry and without chemistry you have no team."

The Warriors will play their final regular season game against Desert Heights Prep on Thursday and then turn their attention to Salome on Friday for region playoffs.
