Jacey Reeves’ domination sparks historic run for Brawley flag
The Wildcats made a historic run to the CIF championship backed by Reeves' performance
BRAWLEY, Calif. (KYMA) - Jacey Reeves isn't your typical flag football player — helping change the culture of Brawley flag football while rushing for more than 1,300 yards and hauling in 1,400 receiving yards in her senior year.
Those accolades propelled her into the conversation as one of the best players not only in the Valley, but across San Diego — earning her Second Team All-CIF San Diego honors.
But the senior claims her coaches put her in a good position to succeed.
"My coaches gave me a lot of opportunities to be a running back, but also certain plays play receiver," Reeves said. "I'm pretty fast, so being able to also run routes and get deep balls thrown to me was so fun. I love catching the ball, so getting a variety of both was really exciting."
The craziest part, there was a chance Reeves never stepped onto the field to reach those numbers in the first place.
"A lot of my friends were doing it and that just automatically made me excited. Being a part of something new is just really refreshing and cool," Reeves said. "Football is such a known sport and such an awesome sport, so having that opened for girls too, I was like, why not be a part of something like that."
Taking that chance paid off, as Reeves quickly became one of the best in San Diego, earning a spot on the Second Team All-CIF San Diego list.
"All the girls in the valley and San Diego are so talented," Reeves said. "Playing competition like that really showed me how much this is growing and how much hard work other girls are putting into it also, so being with them in that award is like such an honor."
Even with the individual accolades, it was the journey with her teammates that meant the most, as Reeves and her pack made a run all the way to the championship.
"I don't think I've ever had a team that got to play in a game like that," Reeves said. "Even being runners up was still such a good achievement and just being there with those girls specifically, it was just really awesome."
Above all, Reeves became a leader, and was thrilled it was with this group of ladies.
"A lot of my teammates this year were younger, so it's kind of like a whole new team and we kind of had to adapt and teach a whole new kind of idea to these girls who had just joined, but being a senior and getting to kind of like take them in was super special," Reeves said. "The bonds I made with those people, I'll carry on with me forever, they're lifelong friends now."
And she hopes her impact goes beyond the stat sheet, leaving something lasting with the teammates who'll follow in her footsteps.
"I just really wanted to inspire them too because I love the game so much, and I really wanted them to have that love for the game also."
