Federal agent opens fire during immigration enforcement operation in L.A. County
LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. (NBC, KYMA) - A federal agent opened fire during an immigration enforcement operation outside of Los Angeles Wednesday morning.
It happened in the Willowbrook area as DHS officers were attempting to arrest a man identified as William Eduardo Moran Carballo.
In a statement post to X, DHS describes the man as a "violent criminal illegal alien from El Salvador" who is involved in a human smuggling operation and has two prior arrests.
The agency said Carballo tried to evade arrest by using a vehicle to ram law enforcement.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said there was a brief pursuit that ended in a crash.
DHS says an agent fired defensive shots and Carballo fled on-foot. He was later apprehended by law enforcement and was uninjured.
One CBP officer was injured during the incident, However, the extent of their injuries is unknown, and no one was hit by the gunfire.
