Arizona Western basketball sweeps Cochise in Douglas
DOUGLAS, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Arizona Western College swept its road trip to Douglas on Wednesday night, earning conference wins over Cochise College on both the men’s and women’s sides.
In the nightcap, the Arizona Western men pulled away in the second half to secure an 83–71 win over Cochise, improving to 12–5 overall and 2–0 in conference play. The Matadors led 41–37 at halftime before outscoring the Apaches 42–34 after the break.
Matt Anglo led Arizona Western with 20 points, adding six assists and a pair of steals in a well-rounded performance. Marsai Mason followed with 18 points and a dominant double-double, grabbing 13 rebounds while also contributing two blocks. Paora Winitana was nearly perfect from the field, scoring 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting and pulling down 10 rebounds, giving Arizona Western three double-figure rebounders on the night.
Arizona Western shot 46.3 percent from the floor and knocked down 10 three-pointers, helping the Matadors maintain control down the stretch despite Cochise’s attempts to close the gap.
Cochise was led by Teron Murray, who scored a game-high 22 points, and Jhace Johnson, who finished with 20 points and five assists. Naeem Colston controlled the glass for the Apaches with 15 rebounds, but Cochise struggled from long range, shooting 25 percent from beyond the arc.
Earlier in the evening, the Arizona Western women set the tone with a 72–58 conference win over Cochise College. The victory capped a successful night for the Matadors in Douglas and continued their strong start to conference play.
Arizona Western now returns home with momentum on both sides, having picked up two important road wins against a conference opponent.
