Netflix gives first look at new studios in New Jersey
MONMOUTH, N.J. (NBC, KYMA) - Netflix gave a behind the scenes look at the the former site of Fort Monmouth, the location for the streaming giant's new studios.
It's not just the soundstages, but there's a theater and a hotel proposed as well.
"Fort Monmouth is now home and it's good to be home," said Ted Sarandos, CEO of Netflix.
Sarandos is returning to his roots, opening a $1 billion film and TV production hub just ten minutes away from where he was born at Monmouth Medical.
"We have talked a lot about the production renaissance here in NJ, but maybe not enough about what it means for American jobs and American competitiveness too," Sarandos shared.
Straight off seven wins for Netflix at the Golden Globes, the streaming service was still celebrating Monday morning, toasting its plans for close to half a million square feet of new development in Oceanport and Eatontown, on the former site of Fort Monmouth.
"This is far and away the most complicated project we had in our eight years in office, but at every point along the way it was a joy," said Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ).
Heading into his last week in office, Gov. Murphy says it's part of his legacy, offering major tax incentives to attract not only Netflix, but also Paramount and Lionsgate to open up film and TV facilities in New Jersey, helping not only create jobs on-set, but in the surrounding communities.
"The local pizzerias, grocery stores, all the local catering halls, electricians and plumbers," said Tom Tvrdik, Mayor of Oceanport.
After a groundbreaking in May of last year and demolition ongoing, Netflix plans to open the first four of 12 soundstages in the middle of 2027.
