Deck of Democratic Presidential hopefuls shuffles
Field of candidates narrows on the eve of Super Tuesday primaries - NBC's Alice Barr reports
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KYMA, KECY/NBC News) - The Biden campaign got off to a slow start, but a convincing victory in South Carolina is giving the former Vice-President new momentum heading into his biggest contest yet.
Just a week after his candidacy seemed stalled, Biden's moving into the fast lane among moderates.
"I'm very much alive because of you." he told supporters Monday.
Former rivals Amy Klobuchar and Pete Buttigieg are both set to endorse Biden, less than 24-hours after both decided to drop out of the race.
"I will do everything in my power to ensure that we have a new democratic president come January." said Buttigieg.
The former South Bend, Indiana mayor claimed a narrow victory in the Iowa Caucuses, but both he and Senator Klobuchar failed to gain any traction among African-American voters. That group held the key to Biden's resounding victory in South Carolina.
"We won every county and we won every demographic." Biden told suporters.
He's now hoping to keep the energy going through Tuesday, when 14 states head to the polls, including delegate-rich California and Texas. With literally hundreds of delegates at stake, the other candidates need to make bold moves if they hope to keep frontrunner Bernie Sanders from walking away with an insurmountable lead.
"There is a massive effort trying to stop Bernie Sanders. That's not a secret to anybody in this room." Sanders told supporters.
Senator Elizabeth Warren is still fighting for a breakout moment. Her home state of Massachusetts among those voting Tuesday.
And it will be the first time Mike Bloombert appears on the ballott, putting his millions of dollars in ad spending to the test on what could be the most decisive day of the 2020 primaries.
More than a third of all delegates are up for grabs Tuesday, in just one day of voting. That means we'll have a much clearer picture of this race by the times the polls close Tuesday night.
