Mark Williams receives one-game suspension following fight during game against the Pelicans
NEW ORLEANS (KYMA) - Phoenix Suns center Mark Williams has been suspended following an on-court altercation with a New Orleans Pelicans player during Saturday night's game.
The incident occurred late in the third quarter when Williams set a screen on Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado.
Alvarado responded by shoving Williams, which led to a heated exchange between the two players. The confrontation escalated quickly, resulting in punches thrown by both players before teammates and officials intervened.
The NBA announced disciplinary action on Sunday evening, issuing Williams a one-game suspension without pay.
Alvarado received a two-game suspension without pay for his role in the altercation. As a result, Williams, the Suns' leading rebounder and top shot blocker, will forfeit more than $36,000 in salary. Alvarado will lose two game checks totaling more than $62,000.
Williams will miss Phoenix's next game, which is scheduled against the Washington Wizards.
