California hit with strongest storm of the week

(CNN, KYMA) - Evacuations are underway for several neighborhoods throughout Southern California due to the potential of more than a month's worth of rain and powerful winds.

The state in whole has been pounded with severe storms for the past few days, and Wednesday will be no different.

California just can't catch a break.

"Hazards will include potential flash flooding, rising river flows, mud flows, debris flows, and downed trees. Also, low lying areas can expect ponding," said Mark Pestrella, Director of Los Angeles County Public Works.

After getting hit with an intense weekend storm that claimed at least one life, the Weather Prediction Center says a level four of four "high" risk of flooding rain is in place Wednesday for Southern California, including the Los Angeles area.

"My message to Angelenos as we go into the Christmas holiday is to stay safe, be prepared, and stay informed," said Karen Bass, Mayor of Los Angeles.

Governor Gavin Newsom mobilized state resources ahead of the storm and Los Angeles County issued evacuation orders and warnings for areas in and around land that's weakened due to recent wildfires.

"A lot of mud. A lot of flooding. What I worry is that it gets really into the houses. That's going to be a big problem," said Nicolas Lopez, a California resident.

Officials say on Wednesday and Thursday, parts of Southern California could get at least a month's worth of rain.

"Please avoid flooded roadways, stay away from drainage channels, and do not wait until conditions become dangerous to act. Prepare yourself, it is critical, it could save your life," said Sheriff Robert Luna with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

All the moisture that's causing problems in California will bring heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada region, likely resulting in travel issues.
