Somerton wrestling travels to New Mexico for tournament

RIO RANCHO, New Mex. (KYMA, KECY) - Somerton High School’s wrestling teams delivered strong performances over the weekend at the Southwest Shootout Duals held in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.
The boys’ team secured a ninth-place finish among 28 programs and closed out the tournament on a high note, winning three consecutive matches on the final day to claim first place in their pool. Leading the way were Jayden Preston (126 lbs.) and Kenny Garcia (132 lbs.), who both finished the weekend undefeated. Standout efforts also came from Diego Felix, Freddy Perez, and Peter Rivas, each posting impressive 8–1 records.
On the girls’ side, Somerton concluded the event in eighth place overall. Annette Preston captured the championship title in the 190-pound weight class, while Briella Reynoso earned runner-up honors at 125 pounds. In addition, Sarahi Penya delivered a strong performance to take third place in the 170-pound division.
