Son of ‘El Chapo’ pleads guilty to drug trafficking charges

(KYMA) - One of the sons of notorious Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman pleaded guilty to U.S. drug trafficking charges.

39-year-old Joaquin Guzman Lopez pleaded guilty to two counts of drug trafficking and continuing criminal enterprise Monday.

Lopez admitted to helping oversee the production and smuggling of large quantities of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana and fentanyl into the United States.

The Department of Justice says this fueled a crisis that has contributed to tens of thousands of overdose deaths annually.

The convictions carry a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years in prison and a maximum penalty of life in prison.

A sentencing date has not yet been set. To learn more about this, click here.
