Rev. Jesse Jackson released from the hospital

(NBC, KYMA) - Rev. Jesse Jackson have been released from a Chicago hospital after receiving treatment for a rare neurological disorder.

Jackson's son Yusef says the 84-year-old civil rights leader was admitted to Northwestern Memorial Hospital to be treated for progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), an illness he was diagnosed with earlier this year.

Yusef Jackson also conveyed his family's thanks for the "countless friends and supporter who have reached out" and asked for their continues prayers "throughout this precious time."

Rev. Jackson was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2013, but that diagnosis was updated to PSP earlier this year.

Jackson is now at home with his family as he continues to deal with this ongoing condition. However, his family says he is alert and still working to bring people together to reduce malnutrition during this holiday season.

According to experts, PSP has no known cure.
