200-year-old shipwreck discovered in Lake Ontario

(CBS, KYMA) - A group of Canadian divers exploring beneath the surface of Lake Ontario encountered the wreck of a ship believed to have sunk 200 years ago.

The Jeff Lindsay team said its divers were puzzled to "stumble" upon what they believed was a British ship from the first half of the 19th century, found about 100 meters below the surface of Lake Ontario.

The team was on a mission to find the wreck of the Rapid City, which was built in 1884 and sunk near Toronto, when it found this one instead, according to the CBC.

Lead exploration diver and Ontario Underwater Council President Heison Chak told media it was "rare" for the team to find a shipwreck with both its main mast and fore mast intact, as those structures tend to fall apart over time.

Images show the wreck and the team responsible for its discovery.
