U.S. Coast Guard aircraft flies over Bahamas following Hurricane Melissa

(CBS, KYMA) - An aircraft surveyed the Bahamas on October 30, after Hurricane Melissa tore through the archipelago.

Aerial footage captured by the U.S. Coast Guard Southeast District shows the region on Thursday, a day after the National Hurricane Center (NHC) advised residents to stay sheltered from the incoming storm.

The NHC warned of maximum sustained winds near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher gusts, and a storm surge of four to seven feet.

"This is a serious storm, and it is being met with a serious, coordinated response," Philip Davis, the prime minister of the Bahamas, said in a statement. "To all Bahamians and residents, please stay informed, and act responsibly."
