October 29 is National Cat Day

(CNN, KYMA) - Tens of millions of Americans have a special day to cuddle with their favorite feline as Wednesday, October 29, is National Cat Day.

Cats are known for their independent streak, but will often snuggle in your lap. About 49 million U.S. households own a cat and ownership is trending up.

The American Pet Products Association says the 49 million is nine million more than only two years ago. However, there are millions more cats that live in shelters.

Organizers of National Cat Day hope people who currently are not pet owners will be inspired to consider adopting a cat to help ease the shelter burden.

If you have a cat though, be sure to show him or her off on social media by using #NationalCatDay.
