OpenAI unveils social media app for making and sharing AI videos
LOS ANGELES (CBS, KYMA) - Artificial intelligence (AI) is taking another step forward as OpenAI's latest social media app is producing sophisticated videos which has Hollywood hollering.
It looks like your typical social media feed, but in reality, they are all AI-generated videos on Sora, OpenAI's newest edition of its social media platform.
CBS News reporter Jo Ling Kent took the app for a spin. The first thing Sora did was scan her face and voice. Then, she asked the app to make a video of her riding a dragon into the sunset.
She asked Sora to create a video of her deliver a fake news broadcast, and was even able to create a sit-down interview with OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, but she added kittens and puppies so no one would ever think it's actually real.
On Monday, the Motion Picture Association criticized the new technology, urging OpenAI to "take immediate and decisive action," saying the videos "infringe our members' films, shows, and characters"
Charlie Fink, a consumer tech columnist at Forbes, was asked what this means for real humans in Hollywood, and he said, "Over time, it's not good because fewer of them will be required, but that said, people crave people...So I think celebrities and entertainers are going to be fine."
For now, Sora 2 is available by invitation only, and the real-life OpenAI CED Sam Altman has said more changes are on the way, posting that the company "will give rightsholders more granular control over generation of characters."
