AWC Baseball hires Jon Wente to lead Matadors

There's a new ringleader heading the charge for Matador baseball

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Arizona Western College hired Jon Wente as the Matadors new baseball coach.

Wente comes in with nearly 30 years of coaching experience at many different levels, but this go around he gets to run the show as the head coach.

He says the opportunity is super exciting for a variety of reasons.

"Being a head coach, you get to kind of make your own schedule," Wente says. "You get to kind of put your imprint in the program of how you wanna play and which way you want your team to play."

The veteran leader says coaching a team full of players from all over the world is cool.

"It keeps you kind of young. You gotta learn how to communicate, and for these guys to get a chance to come to a place where they can get better every single day, it's a great opportunity for all of us," he said.

With loads of experience, Coach Wente looks to pick the program up right where they left off last year with a 35-20 record.

There season kicks off down the line on February 15 against Eastern Arizona College.
