Man and his son speak out after woman confronts him over Phillies home run ball
PHILADELPHIA (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - After a Phillies fan Drew Feltwell gave his son a home run ball during a game Friday, a woman angrily confronted him, claiming the ball was hers and demanded he give it to her.
Their interaction, and the fallout, has gone viral, and now, the father and son are speaking out about the incident.
"I wouldn't expect her to say some apology or anything. I'd be happy with the ball. That would be the main gesture," Feltwell expressed.
Feltwell described the now viral and highly unusual situation he and his family found themselves in Friday night.
It all started when Phillies player Harrison Bader hit a solo home run ball in the fourth inning during the game in Miami against the Marlins.
"I walked down a couple of seats, and it fell and kind of bobbled between the two armrests and I picked it up. And as I was pulling away, two other hands came, and I didn't really care at that point. I just walked away and held the ball up high and put it in Lincoln's glove," Feltwell shared.
The South Jersey native told an NBC affiliate in Philadelphia in an exclusive interview that he felt like "SuperDad" after he got the ball.
That's because he took his family to that particular game hoping to catch a home run ball for his son Lincoln's birthday this week.
"I thought I had accomplished this great thing and putting it in his glove meant a lot," Feltwell remarked.
NBC Sports Philadelphia cameras capturing it all and airing it on live TV, but the heart-warming moment was very short-lived because just as Feltwell embraced his son, a woman in Phiillies gear runs up to them and puts her hand on Feltwell's arm, startling him.
"Then she's like, 'That's my ball. You stole it out. Those are from our seats.' And I said, 'There was nobody in that seat.' And she said, 'That's from where we were sitting.' And she just went on and on," Feltwell explained.
The two go back and forth before Feltwell eventually decides to take the ball out of his son's glove and give it to the woman who takes it with her to her seat the next section over.
"The boos started, and they were very intense. Once it got going, you could feel the depth of how many boos from the stadium," Feltwell said.
"I wasn't very happy that we had to give it to her, but we can't win. She was gonna get it anyways," Lincoln added.
The incident quickly went viral on social media and was the topic of conversation on social media over the weekend.
"Every moment around my kids is a potential teaching moment. So, I try to keep that mentality and I guess it shined through," Feltwell spoke.
This dad says the kindness of others shined through as well.
As the game continued on, Marlins fans brought Lincoln two baseballs, and the Marlins organization stopped by with a goody bag and then later, an opportunity of a lifetime: Harrison Bader met with the family and gave Lincoln a signed bat.
"It was very, very fun getting to meet Bader," Lincoln declared.
"It worked out. You got a signed bat and quite a bit of attention. A lot of funny memes and internet stuff..Pretty crazy," Feltwell added.
The Feltwells say they do not know the woman who approached them and aren't expecting to hear from her.
NBC News tried to reach out to her and give her an opportunity to share her side of the story, but so far, her identity remains a mystery.
