Tips for establishing a back-to-school routine

(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - The transition from a lazy summer schedule to a hectic fall frenzy can be rough for parents and their children.

It doesn't help that there's less sunlight, which affects melatonin levels and the Circadian Rhythm, but getting just 10 minutes of sun in the morning can help reset the sleep-wake cycle.

However, if back-to-school anxiety is leading to restless nights, New York University's Child Mind Institute recommends parents establish a routine, listen to your kids and reassure them about whatever is on their mind, and don't overschedule their lives with activities.

Dr. Jon LaPook, CBS News Chief Medical Correspondent, says with so much going on in the world, from political turmoil to school shootings, remind your kids that you're there for them.

"Giving them the sense they are safe. You know, for them, the world is a safe place. I would say to my kids, 'What's my job, to keep us safe.' And then I would say to the next question, 'Am I good at my job?' 'Oh yeah, my dad's competent, I'm safe.' The world is full of terrible things. For you, it's magical, but for kids, they can get so anxious, but for you it's a safe place."

Dr. LaPook also recommends cutting out screen time a few hours before bed and talk to your pediatrician about how to keep your child healthy.
