The Diamondbacks are unable to sweep Dodgers in late-inning loss
LOS ANGELES (KYMA, KECY) - A dramatic eighth-inning comeback by the Arizona Diamondbacks fell just short on Sunday afternoon, as Will Smith's walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth handed the D-backs a 5–4 loss at Dodger Stadium.
Trailing 4–1 late, the Diamondbacks broke through in the top of the eighth. After a leadoff single and a walk, Corbin Carroll stepped to the plate and crushed a three-run homer off Dodgers reliever Daniel Hudson. It was Carroll’s 22nd home run of the season and tied the game at 4 apiece.
The Diamondbacks' offense had been kept quiet for most of the afternoon by Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who struck out 10 over seven innings and allowed just one run.
Arizona scratched out a run in the third thanks to a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly by Blaze Alexander, but that was all they could muster against Yamamoto.
Starter Jordan Montgomery battled through six innings for the Diamondbacks, giving up three earned runs on eight hits while striking out four. He allowed an early RBI double to Freddie Freeman and a run-scoring single to Andy Pages, but ultimately did enough to keep Arizona in the game.
Arizona’s bullpen took over in the seventh, and despite holding the Dodgers scoreless in the eighth after Carroll’s game-tying blast, the bottom of the ninth proved decisive.
With left-hander Kyle Nelson on the mound, Los Angeles turned to Will Smith as a pinch-hitter to lead off the inning. On a 1–1 pitch, Smith launched a solo shot to center field, ending the game and denying the Diamondbacks a sweep.
The loss dropped Arizona to 71–64, and they still sit firmly in the Wild Card race.
