Gila Ridge dominates Somerton in season-opening golf match

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Gila Ridge Hawks opened their 2025 golf season in commanding fashion Thursday morning, taking down the Somerton Toros in a boys varsity stroke play event at Mesa Del Sol Golf Course.

The Hawks, posted a team score of +14, far ahead of the Toros' +127 mark in this local matchup.

Gila Ridge's depth proved the difference, with sophomore Grady Ebert leading the way at 37 (+1) to finish atop the leaderboard.

Senior Trent Karvoski wasn’t far behind with a 39 (+3), while returners Trent Caudle and Jakub Kallinger each carded 41 (+5). Senior Gavin Schreiber rounded out the scoring with a 43 (+7).

For Somerton, the morning proved to be a tough test against one of the Yuma region's perennial contenders. Michael Anderson led the Toros with a 63 (+27), followed by Luis Cota at 65 (+29), Edgar Galaviz at 71 (+35), and Jose Valtierra closing out the lineup.

Both teams return to action next week as the AIA fall schedule ramps up.
