Phoenix-bound American Airlines flight diverts after a fire breaks out on the plane
PHOENIX (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - There were frightening moments for passengers on a Phoenix-bound American Airlines flight when a fire broke out on the plane Saturday.
Flight 357 took off from Philadelphia, but was forced to make an emergency landing at Dulles International Airport.
The plane landed safely at Dulles following reports of smoke from a customer's device.
According to the airline, "The device was quickly contained by crew members prior to landing."
Officials have not said what type of device it was, but passengers say the entire incident was handled smoothly.
"It was in the back. I could smell it, but I couldn't see it. They got it out pretty quick. They did a little running around, there was a fire extinguisher, there was a bag and then there was a bag they put everything in, sealed it and the firemen took it," said George Rhea, a passenger.
