Man shot and killed while trying to break into an off-duty state police agent’s home in Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Virginia State Police says an off-duty special agent shot and killed a man trying to break into his Virginia Beach home.

The shooting happened in the Bay Colony neighborhood of the city just before noon Sunday.

State Police say a 40-year-old man tried to break into the home and got into an altercation with the off-duty agent, who then fired his service weapon during the struggle, hitting the man.

The man was was taken to a nearby hospital where he died while State Police officials say the agent suffered moderate injuries and received treatment.

The agent has been placed on administrative leave while the case is being reviewed, which is standard, and the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Richmond Division is handling the investigation.
