Prep Football team previews: Vincent Memorial Scots
The Scots look to bring more heart, intensity and grit to the field as they take on underdog mantra into season.
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - "Right now, we're the underdogs, but who doesn't love an underdog story?" Senior wide receiver Richie Vizcarra is setting the story up for the Vincent Memorial Scots.
The Scots believe other teams are counting them out, but that isn't fair according to the veterans on Vincent Memorial.
Senior Co-Captain Manuel Quintero adds an element to the Scots story that will help them push through the season.
"A lot of people last year were playing for ourselves, you know, and not as a team," Quintero said. "This year, our job as the captains, as seniors, is just to join the team up and play it as a brotherhood."
That will be easier said then done though, as every good underdog story includes some obstacles. Co-Head Coach Fernando Santana says Vincent Memorial checks that box because of the amount of veteran turnover.
"We're rebuilding because we lost 23, 24 seniors last year," Santana said. "They were all starters, so it's a rebuilding year for us, but it looks like the JVs coming up are good, and we'll try to be the best that we can, with what we have."
Luckily, the Scots brought in new Offensive Coordinator Luis Mendivil to open up the offense and give them a boost on that side of the ball.
Outside of bringing a new scheme to Vincent Memorial, Quintero believes they can bring even more to the table then just their play on the gridiron.
"We just gotta play with a lot of heart, a lot of discipline, everything, you know."
As the season makes its way from start to finish, the Scots hope their script ends with a top finish in the Desert League and a deep run into the CIF Playoffs. For now, the next chapter begins against Imperial at home, Friday, August 28.
